I thought this was hilarious and have thought about it a bunch since I first read it -- finally coming on now to comment, I am SHOCKED at the replies.... over a silly and cute story about your kids!

ANYHOO... funny that you replied to my blog about sisters being the bestest of friends. Remember it was your stories about you and your sisters that prompted me to have the girls share a room (which is going wonderfully) -- and I came on here to remind you of that, when I see that blessing in action -- sisters loving and defending you! Sisters are a blessing, a blessing I was not able to have but luckily, I have many in Christ :-)

i couldn't agree with you more on the kids don't have political views comment. I know that my oldest (11) pays attention and even asks questions about the stuff that she hears. most of the time she gives a puzzled look and says well, that weird or that's not fair.

Thanks Heather for that very well thought out and well written comment. Being Marsha's big sister, I get a little defensive and knew I couldn't post a response because it wouldn't come out like it should. It's just sad to me that someone would have any negative things to say about anything Marsha posts. If you've followed Marsha long enough, you should know in what context you should take what she posts or says. This post wasn't a "hey, we hate Obama at our house so off with his head" kind of post. It was more of a "my son is really creative... wanna see" kind of post. Seriously. It's also sad that someone who was so offended or saddened by her post would have to comment anonymously. Anyway, before I get off on a rant, I just wanted to thank you, Heather, for your comment. :) I'm sure Marsha appreciates it too.

Don't let your stomach get in knots, sweetie. Jesus had a sense of humor. I'm sure that even though he respected people and loved sinners and tax collectors (how hard it is to love the IRS!), he still was harsh when need be... remember him saying in Mark 7:27

"First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

And then the Greek/Syrian woman replied to him: "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."

Sounds to me like he had a very firm grasp of his words and they weren't always sugar and spice like a lot of folks imagine.

When there are CLEAR and PRESENT differences in VALUE systems that are evident DAILY in the CHOICES and WORDS our leaders are putting forth before us, we can make judgments about whether they line up with God's plans, purposes, and laws. This is how we know good and evil - other than the deep down feeling (conscience) that we should all have inside our hearts. Little children's perceptions about what is right and wrong is very acute. So if we share information about what our government officials are doing and they are not good - it is only natural for them to paint the person as a 'good' or 'evil' character. That doesn't mean that all men aren't flawed and in need of a savior. It also doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk to them about how everyone needs prayers and respect - even if they are not obeying God's laws or being 'good'.

I for one am glad when my kids can see a hero in someone - a good guy - a white hat cowboy. And I'm glad when they can see that someone is NOT living up to God's standards... because that means they are discerning right from wrong.

Matthew 11:25 - At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

It doesn't hurt to have imagination about the 'battle' between good and evil, either. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a good C.S. Lewis novel, watched Lord of the Rings, or enjoyed seeing the good guy win in any American movie can probably understand why boys do this sort of imaginary play. They want to be the good guys. They want to be on God's side. They want GOOD to overcome evil.

So I would give your boys a big fat gold star and a pat on the back for creativity... and not worry about what anyone else thinks about it. And of course (as I am sure you already have - knowing YOU, your servant's heart and amazing faith) discuss with them WHY they think that each character embodies their role in the comic... and what a real life solution might be for the people in your comic - so that everyone can come to Jesus and be counted in the end (without light-sabers and decapitation, of course).

And on another (snarky and less pious) note:

I laughed that this brought about frowns because we are TOTALLY not politically correct in my family. While I am a very respectful citizen, I am also a very light-hearted person that loves a good joke. It doesn't matter if it is at the expense of my cat or the president. You should hear our rendition of "Wheels on the Bus" sung with today's political gestalt in mind. Seriously, we could make milk spew out of your nostrils. It's FUNNAY!

I won't be blogging about it, though... because I don't want a mob of Democrats with pitchforks and burning torches at my doorstep. ;) I know my bloggin' limits, even as LOUDMOUTH and non-tactful as I tend to be. Us non-party conservatives are a rowdy bunch gun-and-religion clingers, eh?

P.S. And (although it is entirely unrelated) my Viking may be the only one in the world that can actually beat up Chuck Norris.

Dear Anonymous-

I wholeheartedly agree! God IS in control of everything and I will not be depressed or fearful of this administration.

It is difficult for me to read exactly what you mean or to tell how offended (if at all) you might be.

Sure I was surprised at that last picture but I am not going to read too much into it. An 8yo boy drawing a cartoon with a couple of other 8yo boys is not a big deal. Of their own accord and imagination, they are copying a popular movie and cartoon series. It's DARTH VADER and LUKE SKYWALKER... even if they symbolize Obama and McCain to him.

We have spoken before to our boys about respecting the office of President. And like ALL the other lessons we teach them, sometimes you just have to tell them more than once!

As to "Kids don't have political views" I have to disagree. They might not understand about taxes, pork or ACORN, but they DO understand right and wrong. Much of my personal political views are determined by morality. And it doesn't take a genius or adult to understand basic issues like killing unborn babies is wrong.

So I am THANKFUL that my children see things like that in black and white. That there are heroes and villains, good and bad, right and wrong in their minds.

Don't worry, we have made it very clear that it would be wrong to lop someone's head off with a light saber! :)

I did not intend to offend with my posting of a simple comic by my son. Please don't confuse a simple drawing with something more sinister.

In the future, I do hope you will comment with a name attached. My stomach gets all in knots with Anonymous comments!

And if you find no humor, peace or joy here, I humbly ask that you move on to another blog. I don't ever want to make anyone miserable by visiting the happenings in my life.

I can appreciate your son's being patriotic in your political party. And I'm sure the democrats kids do the same thing. To each his own I suppose. But would we call that teacher a propagandist? What if your boys had come home with the opposite messages? I cringe at the thought that there may have been democrat kids in that class going home with these messages. It 'could' stir the "you know what".

I cringe because I wouldn't want to see that backfire on the teacher.
