The things kids say...

We went to the mall the other evening and were wandering about the Food Court trying to decide what to eat for supper.  As we passed the Famous Wok and Cajun Grill the following exchange took place:

The man working in front of the counter says to my 6yo son, "Would you like to try this Orange or Teriyaki Chicken?"  The man leans down to hand my son the toothpicked samples.

My son turns to me and loudly says, "Mommmeeeee! I don't know how to speak Spaaaanish!"

I was horrified.  And embarrassed.  Embarrassed and horrified.  I quietly told my son that the man was not speaking Spanish-- he just had a foreign accent (and it wasn't even a hispanic accent!).  We smiled, ate the delicious chicken and went on our way.

I suppose it could've been worse.

Kids can say the funniest, cutest things...and also the most embarrassing!

Many years ago, I was a nanny for two years. I remember a time when I took the little girl, Brooke, to get her portrait taken in a mall. As we walked though a department store, Brooke exclaimed in a loud voice, "Melissa, that man doesn't have any arms!!!"

I bent quickly down to her level and whispered, "Brooke, talk to me about it later and don't stare." I assumed she was looking at a disabled person and didn't want her to make the person feel badly.

Silly me! I glanced around and then realized she was referring to an armless mannequin. Whew!

But another time in a store, she saw a little girl with dreadlocks and loudly asked me, "Why doesn't she comb her hair?!"

Sorry for your embarrassment due to your son's comment!

Hey Marsha! I've been reading blogs tonight and I had to laugh at how many I commented on RIGHT AFTER YOU! We must be on the same wavelength tonight. :)

Schools going ok. I feel better after looking through the boys notebooks tonight and seeing that....yeah, we have been doing something! We are lovin' the read alouds and the history. Not lovin' the Language Arts...so I am doing some other things there...and I am doing better at getting Caden's phonics, etc. squeezed in during our morning time. Anyway....thanks for visiting my blog my sweet Texan friend!

I would have been wanting to crawl under the nearest table. My ds has no qualms about saying what is on his mind, and I have been embarassed many times. I will never forget the time we were walking down the hall in church and met a lady, who was probably about 8 months pregnant, wearing a green dress. Ds was really just becoming more vocal, and piped up with, "Oh Mommy look at the big green one!" YIKES! Luckily this lady had a good sense of humor!

LOL, oh how I remember those comments from my small children! It's totally humiliating, but you know what? It's normal for them and these horrifying little incidents become big chuckles we remember later on. Just remember - at least you're not like me with 14 and 16 year olds who STILL make comments that horrify their poor Mom!!! LOL I can't even chuck it off to them being too young to know better. *SIGH*

And you're right, it could have been worse. LOL! Hey, he'll love that story when he's older! Maybe. :)

Reminds me of one day when my kids were "trying to speak spanish" and kept saying nonsensical words, complete with weird accents, and then asking "Was that Spanish Mom?" To which I'd say, "um, NO", so they tried again a few more times (quite earnestly and sincerely), just apparently not quite able to grasp the full understanding of the simple concept that I was trying to explain to them... You can't just *say* it, without first *learning* it! Fortunately, we were home.:-) But yeah, mine also used to assume that when one is speaking very differently, it just MUST be Spanish! Too cute.:-)
