It is well with my soul

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

One of my favorite songs. I sing this to the kids each night before they sleep. Tonight I sang it to them with tears in my eyes. Although it is well with my soul, I miss dear sweet Christian. He will be in my thoughts and my heart ALWAYS, until we see him in Heaven. I love you my sweet sister! I love you, I love you, I love you!!!!

Love you, Sister! Any words I could think to put here would be so inadequate. You and your family are foremost in my heart and mind this very minute and throughout the day ahead.

Praying for you and your family, sweetie. As Christy said, words are so inadequate. But I want you to know that you're thought of and being held up before the Lord in prayers. Praying that He comfort you in the way that only He can.

love,

Beautiful... I love that song. It is one of my favorites. And the circumstances behind the song are just as moving. "Adventures in Odyssey" did a radio show documenting the song and Horatio Spafford, the man who wrote the song.
I am rambling now, :) but Philip Bliss, who composed the music for the song grew up in my home town of Rome, Pa. There is even a museum dedicated to him.

Thank you so much for sharing this.
I am so glad that my sin is nailed to the cross and that some day our faith will be sight.
I will be praying hard for you today!
Love in Christ,
Angie

Marsha, I first read about you in The Old Schoolhouse and because of you selected curriculum that worked very well for teaching my children to read. I have followed you off and on since, but never commented. Just want you to know how many lives you have touched as we have watched you walk this journey. God is doing an amazing work through you. Praying for you today.

beautiful post, marsha. i love that song but have sometimes wondered whether i would have the strength and faith to still sing it in the face of unspeakable tragedy. i have a hard enough time singing it just in the middle of life's "little" trials. yet i can see through you that God does give the strength & peace we need when we need it. i need to remember this song when i am in those "little" trials that seem so big yet do not even compare to yours.

thinking of you and praying for you today as you celebrate the life of your littlest man.

Marsha,

Thank you for the example you've set w/your continued trust in God. Although it has been a blessing being a reader of your blog this past year, my heart still breaks whenever I read about your Littlest Man. I'm so thankful that it is well w/your soul.

I will continue to pray for you and your husband as well as for your older two boys. May God continue to provide the comfort all of you need and fill the place of Christian here on earth until you see him again.

Thanks for sharing Horatio Spafford's beautiful song of testimony, and for the testimony to your own faith in the Lord. The hymn has encouraged many over the years, as the posted comments to your blog illustrate.

The story behind the hymn is pretty well known, but I've shared a bit on my daily blog, Wordwise Hymns, this morning that might interest you--including a photo of the telegram sent by Mr. Spafford's wife, after the tragedy.

If you love our traditional hymns and gospel songs, the site might be one you'd like to list on your own. I'd sure appreciate that. God bless you and your family.
